South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. However, it's healthier than one would expect.

The country is in search of an alternative development model. A Confucian culture that stresses respect for ancestors and gendered family relations continues influence society. But there are signs that a secular culture is beginning to emerge.

Origins

In the prehistoric era the ancestors of the today's Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild foods. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and made furs. These tribes formed tribal states in succession in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools, and later iron ones. They traded with other nations and introduced block and celadon printing to Japan, as well as styles of art, a written language, and papermaking.

Gojoseon was founded in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. The state adopted Chinese culture which included Confucian Philosophy and Buddhism. In this time, the inhabitants of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a state that was hierarchical where the monarch and other senior officials were members of the aristocracy of the land, while the majority of the population were peasants. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families, and had to be obeyed and respected by all, including their grandchildren and children.

Goryeo, which would rule from 918 to 1392 CE established the Hangul alphabet based on the shapes made by the mouth when it was pronounced. This significantly improved communication between people and resulted in an explosion of the writing of Buddhist texts. Woodblock printing and the movable metal type were also improved. It was during this time that the Samguk sagi, also known as 'History of the Three Kingdoms' was first recorded in 1145 CE.

The evolution of Korea

The Korean peninsula was habitable from Neolithic times onwards. Early evidence of human settlements can be found in the form of cist graves paved with stones, and adorned with precious items such as amazonite jewelry that were buried with the dead. Gojoseon became the first political state to be recognized in the first half of 1st millennium BCE. Baekje is the most powerful of these states was diminished by the fall of Goguryeo (676 CE) and was left with only its southern territories in Manchuria and the the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo as well as the Gaya confederacy, prospered for a time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territorial holdings. Silla with the aid of the Chinese eventually conquered and united the peninsula in 935.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase its development model appears to be in flux. The people who are awed by the huge cost of the old system are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of capital, labor and product markets. On the other hand, people who support the old system try to protect it by promoting nationalist sentiments, and by inflating fears about potential job loss.

This article reviews developments to date by analyzing five phases of the country's political evolution that include democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and democratic participation (2002 to the present). Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. The creationists have been successful in promoting their views to this group. A survey in 2009 revealed that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was not enough evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory did not align with their beliefs and 17% said it was difficult to understand. This level of disbelief is comparable to that of the United States where a similar percentage of people do not believe that humans evolved from less advanced types of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and in bringing them to Christ. In 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event was attended by an impressive crowd of scientists, professors and church leaders.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31 1981. The meeting was covered extensively in national newspapers including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group presented its own work and published articles on the scientific evidence for the existence of God. KACR members lectured throughout the nation in universities and churches.

A KACR success was seen at the KAIST University in Seoul. Students at KAIST in Seoul were so keen on the concept of creationism that they raised money and got support to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.

In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, gave way to miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. Similarly, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern jazz and rock and roll. The economic crisis has shaped Korea's new development paradigm. The primary challenge for the new regime is to strike an equilibrium between market-oriented and state-led economic policies. Later, Baekje was incorporated peacefully into Goryeo as a successor state. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a central government system. This marked the end to the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was later ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
