WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost in specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. A random substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the need to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities, and can be accessed at any time to upgrade items your gear. It is recommended to visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks, to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear. For instance, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while buying a similar item level upgrade from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons, tools, armor, and other items. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the preview of an item's next upgrade level, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and the current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Many locations have upgraders for their items which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of obtaining a new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II is no upgrader for items available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades are acquired via a variety of means, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been altered a bit, with some new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a certain level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading other items to that same item level will be less expensive, even when they are part of a different gear set.

The discount applies to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is reduced too, but it is only available once certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

Players have a number of options for upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests can only be spent on gear of a specific rank, and every rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and simplest upgrade route costs 15 crests while the more complex one may require as many as 20 crests, based on the type of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of any difficulty for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons to obtain endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. For instance, when an item is at the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one use therefore it's essential to use them properly.
