The Best Robot Hoover

The best robot hoover can vacuum and mop without needing your attention, and leaves your floors spotless. Its low cost and features that are high-end (such as dirt detection) are great features.

1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive sibling the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we have tested. They are equipped with motors that are top of the line and can suction up to 5,500 Pascals. As with other premium iRobot models (including the top pick), they use smart mapping technology to create detailed floor plans and avoid common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also have carpet boost, a feature which boosts the robot's power when it sees a lot of dirt on the carpet, allowing it clean quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on floors that were bare and are especially adept at cleaning dog hair. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a great option for those who want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also extremely quiet and operates when you're at work or school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 comes with a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has an impressive suction system and a self-emptying bin. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, but it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performing mop and vacuum combination uses advanced sensor technology to avoid obstacles and pet waste, and it learns the layout of your home over time to provide more efficient cleaning. You can alter the schedule of cleaning and Robot Hoover even customize zones using the app that is well-designed. Its battery life is average in comparison to other models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a carpeted room which prevents cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also perfect for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It's not as efficient on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum/mop which could clean an entire home and had 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on various flooring and rooms with different flooring types including some area rug. Its obstacle detection was excellent and it was able to avoid fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but it has superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empties into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen in other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

With an elegant circular design that looks like a regular Roomba than the competition's boxy units, this mop and robot vacuum is one of the most attractive looking models in our tests. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It has advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot vacuums that mop that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the sole robot vacuum or mop that scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is thanks to a combination high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, offering a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings before work, or in the evening when you are trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and better-looking. If you're willing to live with a little more noise and some additional cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and fills up the water tank, and cleans and dries mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out the floor plan and detect obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its top rivals. It also has a camera mounted on the front to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the home based on how dirty these areas are.

For larger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home via the app or voice commands. If you have lots of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. Additionally the recharge and Robot Hoover resume feature that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you would think from its price. It is a good vacuum cleaner and picked up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using a single pad and a rotating motion that cleans better that most of the robot mop cleaners that we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured app, and a self-emptying base that is washable.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through an initial mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to set up an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency. The app has a range of features, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It features an impressive 8000 Pascal suction and sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. You can also organize a spot-cleaner which will thoroughly clean a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed like cute little eyes. It is great at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get caught on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot vacuums we have tested. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that isn't able to double as an emptying bin.
